Matthew Bates is a co-founder and secretary of Apex and coordinated the largest drug trial ever conducted at high altitude during the second Apex expedition. He is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Specialist Registrar in Cardiology in Newcastle upon Tyne.
