The APEX 7 Expedition Concludes...

The APEX 7 expedition has formally ended!!

After over 2.5 years of planning and preparation, the APEX 7 expedition has finally come to an end. On Friday 11th July, the expedition team made their way from Huayna Potosi Basecamp (4800m) back to La Paz (3600m) for the final day of the expedition.

APEX 7 successfully took 85 students, 4 expedition doctors, and 8 committee all the way from Edinburgh to La Paz (& back again hopefully!). Whilst here, we conducted 7 research studies, each investigating some of the widespread effects of hypobaric hypoxia on human physiology.

Our volunteers have had an amazing time getting up to all sorts. Some of our top events with volunteers were: the daily book club (and pre-book club book club!), our visit to watch The Strongest play Universitario de Vinto in a nail-biting 3-2 win, our visit to the British Embassy in Bolivia, and of course, the famous APEX night-out! We hope that the expedition has created countless memories for our volunteers and helped to expand their boundaries.

It would be amiss if we were not to mention another member of the APEX 7 family who was unfortunately unable to attend, John Aravinth. John was meant to be one of the APEX 7 expedition volunteer, but tragically passed away in the months leading up to the expedition. We're certain that John would have made an amazing addition to our family, and his humour and wisdom was sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers will be with his family and friends always.

Now that the expedition is over, volunteers are going there separate ways, some North, some South. Volunteers now have the opportunity to explore South America, before we head back to the UK for another year of university to begin. This also gives the committee the much needed time to destress and relax!!
